Three countries, one owner
Bankhall is in Blackpool, in Lancashire. The owner, the British Halewood, also has Aber Falls in North Wales and Bonnington in Leith, Edinburgh. That makes it, by its own account, the only company in the world that distills whisky in England, Scotland and Wales.
The Blended British Malts, launched in February 2024, is exactly that: a blend of single malts from those three own distilleries, at forty-six percent. Note: British single malt is not a protected category like Scotch or Irish whiskey. It is a designation by the producer, not a legal type.
The bottles we have in stock
The blend of three countries, and the single malt at forty percent.
A name from Liverpool
- The distillery in brief
- BlackpoolIn Lancashire, England.
- March 2020Production starts.
- May 2023The first single malt of its own.
- February 2024The British Malts is released.
When whisky writer Alfred Barnard visited all the distilleries of the United Kingdom at the end of the nineteenth century, he found only four in England. One of them was Bank Hall Distillery near the docks of Liverpool, dating from 1790.
Halewood, itself from the Liverpool area, brought that name back for a new distillery in Blackpool. The fit-out began in November 2019, production started in spring 2020. There is no continuous line with the old Liverpool distillery: the place is different and the company is different.
What is distilled here is distinctly American in design. Head distiller Vince Oleson came over from Widow Jane in Brooklyn and works with new charred American oak. The first own single malt, Rebellion, appeared in May 2023: three years old, fifty-seven point seven percent, about two hundred and thirty-five numbered bottles.
England, Scotland and Wales, from three stills of its own.
What to look out for
British single malt is not a protected category. Judge the bottle on what is in it, not on the designation.
The blend is forty-six percent and the single malt forty; check the label.
