Why here

Everything from their own house

Most blends are made from purchased whisky. Not at Grant’s: the malt comes from its own distilleries (including Glenfiddich and Balvenie) and the grain whisky from its own grain plant in Ayrshire. That gives the blender unusually much control.

Triple Wood, the current core bottle, got that name in 2018. Before that the same whisky was called Family Reserve; the contents did not change. The three types of wood are refill American oak, first fill ex-bourbon and new American oak.

About the bottle

A triangle from 1957

  • A brief history
  • 1887William Grant builds Glenfiddich.
  • 1898The first blended whisky.
  • 1957The triangular bottle is designed.
  • 1963Its own grain plant is added.

William Grant was manager at another distillery for seven years before building his own house at the age of forty-eight, with his children and second-hand stills. The first spirit flowed on Christmas Day 1887. The blend came eleven years later.

The triangular bottle is not a marketing gimmick but a genuine piece of design from 1957, by Hans Schleger, a German graphic designer who fled to Great Britain from the Nazis.

After well over a hundred and thirty years, the company still belongs to the same family. In the world of the big blends that is a rare exception; almost all the others are in the hands of listed corporations.

Malt from its own stills, grain from its own plant.

Practical

What these bottles go with

A blend for every day: with ice, with sparkling water, or simply neat. Not a bottle you need to steer clear of.

Anyone who wants to hear what is in it can put a Glenfiddich or Balvenie next to it; those malts form the backbone.
