Why here

What is and is not in the bottle here

This is important to know before you buy. The Parkmore distillery in Dufftown was built in 1894 and stopped distilling in 1931. The buildings are still there and have been used for storage ever since, but no spirit has come out of it for almost a century. Whisky that is six to eight years old therefore cannot possibly come from there.

Parkmore Selection is a brand name of a Scottish bottler that uses a historic building on that site to assess casks. The bottle contains young Speyside or Highland malt, at forty-six percent and not chill-filtered. Which distillery it is is not stated; only the region.

About the ghost distillery

Never demolished, but silent for almost a century

Parkmore is one of the most beautiful ghost distilleries in Speyside. Built in 1894, closed in 1931, but never demolished. The buildings were used as a warehouse for almost a century, which is why the complex is still standing in full.

The bottler behind Parkmore Selection is the same one that rents the old warehouses on the Coleburn site and also owns Murray McDavid. On the Parkmore site it uses the former manager’s house from 1894 to sample casks.

The finishes you will come across in this range vary: Madeira barriques, Barolo casks from Piedmont, and regular bourbon maturation. The ages are between six and eight years.

The name of a silent distillery, on young whisky from elsewhere.

Practical

What these bottles go with

Young malt with a pronounced cask finish; easy to compare if you put two side by side.

Do not expect whisky from 1931. That is not what is in the bottle, and we would rather say so right away.

Does the distillery still exist?

The buildings do. They were built in 1894 and have been used for storage since 1931; no distilling takes place any more.
