A Dutch mixing vodka in four sizes
Esbjærg is one of the vodkas that many people keep at home as their regular mixing bottle. What sets it apart here is that we stock all four sizes: the 20 centilitre bottle to try, the half litre, the litre bottle and the Copper Edition.
The Copper Edition is the least well-known bottle. It is distilled in a copper pot still instead of in a column, and that is a different process from the regular Esbjærg.
The four bottles we have are located
All four are 40 percent; the difference lies in the size and, for the Copper Edition, in the way of distilling.
Esbjaerg Vodka Copper Edition
Distilled in a copper pot still, in small batches. 70 centilitres, 40 percent.

What does charcoal filtration do?
With the regular Esbjærg, the wheat grain alcohol is passed over activated charcoal. That charcoal binds some of the substances that came along during distillation. What remains is a more neutral distillate, and that is what you want in a vodka you are going to mix.
A Danish-sounding name, made in Friesland
- The brand in brief
- NetherlandsThe country of origin as it appears on the label.
- LeeuwardenBoomsma Distilleerderij is listed as the producer.
- WheatThe type of grain the alcohol is made from.
- CharcoalWhat the regular Esbjærg is filtered over.
Esbjærg sounds Scandinavian, but the bottle comes from the Netherlands. The label gives the Netherlands as the country of origin, and Boomsma Distilleerderij in Leeuwarden is named as the producer.
Boomsma is a Frisian family business. Dirk Boomsma started in 1883 at the foot of the Oldehove in Leeuwarden with a grocery and drinks shop; since 1960 the company has been located on the Edisonstraat in the same city. The fifth generation now runs it.
The regular Esbjærg is made from wheat grain alcohol that is filtered over activated charcoal. The Copper Edition goes a different way: according to the producer it is made from pure grain alcohol and distilled in small batches in a copper pot still.
All four bottles are 40 percent; the difference lies in the size and the way of distilling.
Where does the name come from?
Esbjerg is a port city on the Danish west coast. Whether the brand name refers to it, we have not found confirmed in any source from the brand itself. What is certain: the vodka is made in the Netherlands.
The regular bottle or the Copper Edition?
If you are looking for a neutral vodka to mix with, the regular Esbjærg is the logical choice. Which size you take depends mainly on how often you use it: the 20-centiliter bottle is for trying it out, the litre bottle for those who always keep it at home.
The Copper Edition is the bottle for anyone who wants to taste what distilling in copper does to a vodka. They are all in the shop at Brink 2 in Bathmen. Call 0570 541 278 if you would like to talk it over.
