Chapter 01 · What you taste

Gascony, once through the column

Armagnac comes from Gascony and is usually distilled in a single pass in its own column still, the alambic armagnaccais. Cognac goes through a still twice; that is why armagnac is fuller and rougher and needs longer in cask. The area has three districts, with Bas-Armagnac the best known. A different area, a different still, a tradition of its own.

Chapter 02 · Young

VS: the shortest time in cask

A designation such as VS refers to the youngest part of the blend, so older distillate may be in it. VS stands for the shortest prescribed ageing in oak: the grape is still clearly present, the wood has just smoothed the rough edges and the colour stays light. Many people start here, and it works well in a mixed drink.

Chapter 03 · The middle ground

VSOP: a few years longer

VSOP sits between VS and XO and requires longer ageing of the youngest part. The difference lies in the years, not in the grape or region. The wood gives vanilla, dried fruit and nut, the colour deepens and the sharpness softens. If you want to drink armagnac neat, this is often the right place.

Chapter 04 · Long in cask

XO and hors d’âge

With XO, even the youngest part of the blend has spent years in oak. Houses use hors d’âge for the same or for even older work. Here the cask takes the lead: dried plum, tobacco, leather and orange peel, with a long finish. Armagnac does not mature further in the bottle.

Chapter 05 · Vintage

The bottle with a year on it

A bottle with a year on it is very common for armagnac. The eau-de-vie from a single harvest year is kept separately in cask until it is bottled, without blending. The year is the harvest year, not the year of bottling: a fine bottle for a birth year or anniversary. Looking for a particular year? Feel free to call, as not every year is always available.

Why here

Armagnac from a wine and spirits shop that knows its shelf

Armagnac is French grape brandy from Gascony, usually distilled once instead of twice. That keeps more of the grape's flavour in it.

This page lists every brand we stock, followed by the number of bottles. Click on a name for that brand's page.

Briefly explained

Armagnac alongside cognac

  • BathmenBrink 2, or online

Both are French grape brandy, but there are two differences you can taste. Armagnac is usually distilled once instead of twice, which keeps more of the grape's flavour: bolder and more rustic. And it comes from Gascony, a region much smaller and more rural than Cognac.

What is special is that armagnac is often sold as a vintage: the spirit from a single harvest year, without blending. That makes it a nice gift for a birth year or anniversary.

Serve it at room temperature in a tulip glass.

Armagnac is often sold by vintage. Handy if you are looking for a birth year.
