Where Ne Flierefluiter comes from
- A brief history
- 1982the first Flierefluiter, a blond beer of 7 percent
- 2001another brew: a tripel of 8.5 percent
- 2012plus de Eeuwling, red-brown and 8.5 percent
- 2016Hop! Hop! Hoera!, an IPA of 5.8 percent
Ne Flierefluiter comes from the Kempen. The beer is brewed on behalf of drinks merchant and beer company Fisser from Zammel, a sub-municipality of Geel. This was originally done at brewery De Smedt in Opwijk; later the brewing moved to Brouwerij Anders! in Halen.
In 1982 it started as an easy-drinking blonde beer of 7 percent, back then as a private-label version of Affligem Blond. Since 2001 the bottle has contained a completely different brew: a tripel of 8.5 percent, according to the company based on an old Kempen recipe.
The beer is promoted as a regional beer of Westerlo, and that is where the nickname Westelse tripel comes from. Flierefluiters is the teasing name for the inhabitants of Westerlo. A flierefluiter is a bon vivant, someone who takes life lightly.
Besides the blonde tripel there are two more: the Eeuwling, red-brown and also 8.5 percent, and Hop! Hop! Hoera!, an IPA of 5.8 percent. We do not currently have those on the shelf. There is also a Flierefluiter jenever.
Flierefluiters is the nickname for the inhabitants of Westerlo. That is why this beer is also called the Westelse tripel.
What is a tripel?
A tripel is golden blond, strong in alcohol and dry in the finish. The name comes from the abbey breweries and refers to the amount of malt that went into the brew: the more malt, the fuller and stronger the beer. A tripel is usually around eight percent.
For Ne Flierefluiter that is 8.5 percent. The label states that only pilsner malt goes into it, with bittering hops and two European aroma hops.
