In Belgium the brewing tradition was never reduced to a single style. Where Germany worked with the Reinheitsgebot for centuries and England stuck to ale, in Belgium spices, sugar, spontaneous fermentation and abbey breweries continued to exist side by side.

As a result you find extremes there: bone-dry lambic from the Zenne valley, heavy quadrupels, spicy saisons and fresh witbiers.

Since 2016, Belgian beer culture has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
