De eerste whisky liep er op 28 december 1879 van de ketels, dezelfde dag als de ramp met de Taybrug. De distilleerderij kende meerdere branden; bij een brand in een pakhuis in 1922 ging zo'n 910.000 liter whisky verloren. Na een herbouw in 1982 staan er tien ketels.
The Glenrothes is eigendom van Edrington en heeft geen bezoekerscentrum: bezoek kan alleen op uitnodiging. Een standaard als deze zet een fles rechtop en zichtbaar neer, in de winkel of achter de bar.
