Chapter 01 · Why the shape matters

A glass is not just any glass

The shape of a glass determines how much foam stays, how much aroma is released and how long the drink stays cold. A weizen glass is tall and curved for the foam, a goblet stands on a stem so that your hand does not warm the beer, a tasting glass tapers so that the aroma comes towards you. The shape matters, more than the brand on the glass.

Chapter 02 · Beer

Beer glasses, from slim flute to goblet

Breweries often prescribe their own glass, and not just for the logo. A pilsner glass is narrow and straight, so the carbonation stays. A weizen glass is tall and flares out, for all that foam. A stemmed goblet gives abbey beer and tripel room for their aroma. Rinse a beer glass in cold water and do not dry it with a greasy cloth: grease breaks foam.

Chapter 03 · Tasting

Whisky and tasting glasses

A tasting glass has a rounded bowl and a narrow rim, so that the aroma collects. That is why a tulip-shaped glass is on the table at a tasting, such as the copita, derived from the sherry glass from Jerez. A tumbler is for whisky on ice or in a cocktail. Do not pour too much: just covering the bottom is enough, the rest of the glass is for the aroma.

Chapter 04 · Small

Spirit and shot glasses

For jenever, vieux and shots there are small glasses, with or without a stem. The tulip-shaped jenever glass is filled to the brim; you take the first sip bending over, without lifting the glass. The straight shot glass has a thick base and is emptied in one go. Long drink and cocktail glasses are in the same corner: tall and straight, with room for ice.

Chapter 05 · Size

Look at the size, not the logo

The volume is usually marked on the glass, with a line where it is full; the foam goes above it. A certification mark by that line means the glass is calibrated. The total capacity of a glass is larger than the serving measure, and sometimes both figures are on it. So look at the line.

Why here

The right glass matters more than you think

A glass is not a detail. The shape determines how much foam stays, how quickly the carbonation escapes and how much aroma reaches your nose. A tripel from a pilsner glass tastes noticeably flatter than from a chalice, and a whisky from a tumbler gives away less than from a tulip glass.

That is why breweries bring out their own glass: it is more than advertising, it is matched to their beer. For a gift, a bottle with the matching glass almost always works.

Not sure which glass you need? Just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Briefly explained

Which glass for which drink?

  • Rules of thumb
  • PilsStraight flute or straight glass: keeps the head firm.
  • Tripel and abbey beerChalice glass: gives the aroma room.
  • WeizenTall and curved: for a big head of foam.
  • Whisky and jeneverTulip glass: channels the aroma to the nose.

The most important rule is that a glass should narrow slightly towards the top if you want to taste the aroma. That applies to whisky, jenever and strong beers: the tulip glass or the chalice collects the aromas, while a straight glass lets them escape.

With pilsner you want just the opposite: keep it cold, a firm head, and drink it quickly. A straight glass does that perfectly well.

One more practical point: rinse beer glasses free of washing-up liquid and do not dry them with a towel washed in fabric softener. Grease residue breaks down the head straight away. That is the most common reason beer foams differently at home than in the pub.

Grease is the enemy of foam. A glass with traces of washing-up liquid will make your beer go flat within a minute.

Frequently asked questions

How many glasses does ’t Bockje have in stock?

211 items: 198 beer glasses, 7 spirit glasses and 6 cocktail glasses.

Which glass goes with which beer?

Pilsner in a straight glass or flute, tripel and abbey beer in a chalice, weizen in a tall curved glass. The shape determines how much foam stays and how much aroma you smell.

Why does my beer foam differently at home than in the pub?

Usually because of grease residue in the glass. Traces of washing-up liquid or a tea towel washed with fabric softener break down the head straight away.

Can I buy individual glasses?

Yes, many glasses can be bought individually. Handy for completing a set if one breaks.

Is a bottle with a glass a good gift?

That almost always works. Tell us which beer or drink it is, and we will find the right glass to go with it.

Does ’t Bockje also ship glasses?

Yes, glasses can be sent with your order. Free collection at Brink 2 in Bathmen is of course also possible.
