Why here

One model, and you buy one

Of Hoegaarden we carry one glass: the 25-centilitre wheat beer glass. It is also the one most people come for, because this is the model that gets broken and leaves you with a single gap in a set of six.

With us you can then order just one. No box, no minimum. To be honest, though: stock is tight at the moment. If you would like several, please give us a call and we will see what can be ordered in.

The Hoegaarden glass is one of the few beer glasses you recognise by its shape without anything printed on it. Below you will find why the shape is the way it is and how a witbier glass differs from a weizen glass.

Need more than one?

Stock of this glass is currently tight. If you are looking for four or six, call 0570 541 278 or email info@bockje.nl. We will note your name and call you back as soon as a box comes in; then you do not have to refresh the online shop every week.

About the glass

Why that glass is so blocky

  • The glass and the beer in four points
  • BlockyThe shape by which the Hoegaarden glass can be recognised.
  • 25 clThe measure that goes with a Hoegaarden in the catering trade.
  • Unmalted wheatWhat sets witbier apart from German weizenbier.
  • Coriander and orange peelThe herbs that go into a witbier.

Hoegaarden is a Belgian witbier from brewery De Kluis, founded in 1966 by Pierre Celis in the village of Hoegaarden. The brand now belongs to AB InBev. In a pub, a 25 centilitre Hoegaarden comes in the typical blocky Hoegaarden glass; for half a litre it is the same glass, only larger.

The fact that it has its own glass has to do with the beer. Hoegaarden is made from water, unmalted wheat, barley malt, hops, coriander and dried orange peel. It is unfiltered, top-fermented, and ferments again in the bottle. So there is yeast in the glass, which is why the way it is poured matters.

That pouring method is described on the back of a bottle with a silver label: first rinse the glass or place it briefly in the ice, pour the bottle half full, loosen the yeast veil by turning the bottle, then pour out the rest. Excess foam may be removed.

Do not confuse the witbier glass with a weizen glass. Witbier and German weizenbier resemble each other, but weizenbier uses less hop and no spices are added, and the wheat in witbier is not malted. Two different beers, two different glasses.

There is yeast in the glass. That is why there is a pouring instruction, and why the glass is wide.

Frequently asked questions about the Hoegaarden glass

Which Hoegaarden glass does ’t Bockje have in stock?

The witbier glass of 25 centilitres. That is currently the only Hoegaarden glass in our range, and it can be ordered individually.

How much goes into a Hoegaarden glass?

The glass we stock is 25 cl. In the hospitality trade, the same model also exists in a larger size for half a litre; we do not have that glass in stock.

Why is the Hoegaarden glass so thick and chunky?

That is the shape by which the glass can be recognised: in a pub you get the typically blocky Hoegaarden glass with a 25 centilitre Hoegaarden. Hoegaarden is an unfiltered witbier that re-ferments in the bottle, so there is yeast in the glass and a pouring instruction goes with it.

What is the difference between a witbier glass and a weizen glass?

They are glasses for two different beers. Belgian witbier such as Hoegaarden is made with unmalted wheat and with spices such as coriander and dried orange peel. German Weizenbier uses less hops, no spices are added and the wheat is malted.

How do you pour a Hoegaarden?

According to the instructions on the back of a bottle with a silver label: rinse the glass or leave it in the ice for a moment, pour the bottle half full, loosen the yeast haze by swirling the bottle and pour out the rest. Excess foam may be removed.

Can I order a single Hoegaarden glass?

Yes. We sell glasses individually; you do not need to buy a set to replace one. If you are looking for several, please give us a call, as stock is currently limited.

Is the Hoegaarden glass dishwasher-safe?

That is not on the product page of this glass, so we do not say it here. Give us a call and we will check the packaging in the shop.

Does ’t Bockje also ship glasses abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you would like to know whether your country is included; glassware is packed separately.
