Jenever: where it comes from

Jenever is the Dutch drink par excellence and older than gin. The English got to know it during the wars in the Low Countries, took it home and turned it into gin. Hence the expression Dutch courage.
The difference lies in the base. Jenever is made with malt wine distilled from grain, and you can taste it: grainier and fuller than gin, with a light sweetness. Gin has a neutral base, so the botanicals come through more sharply.
Serve jenever not ice-cold from a traditional shot glass but at cellar temperature in a tulip glass; then you taste what it is all about.
The English learned it from us and sold it to the rest of the world as gin.

What is the difference between jonge and old jenever?
That is not about age but about the recipe. Oude jenever has more malt wine and is fuller and grainier; jonge jenever has a more neutral base and is lighter and drier.
How do you serve jenever?
At cellar temperature in a tulip glass rather than ice-cold from a traditional jenever shot glass. Then you taste the grain and the botanicals.
