Chapter 01 · What you taste

Malt wine makes the difference

Jenever is distilled grain with juniper berries, and the share of malt wine determines the taste. Malt wine is a distillate of rye, maize and malted barley. Young jenever contains little of it and tastes neutral; old jenever contains more and tastes of grain. Whether a jenever has been aged in a cask is a separate matter.

Chapter 02 · Young or old

Young and old are about the recipe

Young and old are about the recipe, not the years. Old jenever contains at least fifteen per cent malt wine and is fuller and bready; young jenever at most fifteen and is lighter. Young jenever emerged in the last century, when malt wine was scarce. With grain jenever, all the alcohol comes from grain.

Chapter 03 · Corenwijn

Corenwijn is the heaviest type

Corenwijn contains at least fifty-one per cent malt wine and at most a little sugar. That is why the grain comes through most clearly: bread, nuts and a touch of sweetness from the distillate itself. Many corenwijns spend years on oak. Corenwijn and korenwijn are the same drink, just spelled differently.

Chapter 04 · Cask-aged

Years on oak

Some jenevers spend years on oak, sometimes in a cask that previously held sherry, port or rum. That makes the jenever darker and rounder, closer to whisky than to gin, and the juniper moves into the background. A cask statement says something about the cask, not about how long the jenever spent in it.

Chapter 05 · The houses

The Netherlands and Belgium share the name

The name jenever is protected in Europe and belongs to the Netherlands and Belgium, plus a few neighbouring areas in France and Germany. The houses are close together, from Schiedam and Amsterdam to East Flanders, but the recipes differ widely: one house sticks to rye, another works with its own blend of botanicals.

Why here

The Dutch drink par excellence

Jenever is older than gin and its forerunner. English soldiers got to know it in the Low Countries, took it home and turned it into gin. Hence the expression Dutch courage.

Briefly explained

Young, old and korenwijn

  • The types
  • Young jeneverMore neutral base: lighter and drier.
  • Old jeneverMore malt wine: fuller and grainy.
  • KorenwijnAt least 51 per cent malt wine.
  • Berry jeneverActually a liqueur, lower in alcohol.

The biggest misconception about jenever: young and old say nothing about how long the bottle has been aged. It is about the recipe. Old jenever is the traditional style with plenty of malt wine; young jenever only appeared in the twentieth century, with a more neutral base.

If a jenever has been aged in a cask, that is stated separately: five years, ten years, sometimes twenty. Vanilla and woody spice then join in and it heads towards whisky, but with the graininess of the malt wine underneath.

And do not serve it ice-cold from a small jenever glass: at cellar temperature in a tulip glass, you taste what it is all about.

Old jenever is not an old bottle. It is an older recipe, with more malt wine.

Frequently asked questions

How much jenever does ’t Bockje have?

177 bottles from 48 houses.

What is the difference between jonge and old jenever?

That is about the recipe, not the age. Old jenever has more malt wine and is fuller and grainy; young jenever has a more neutral base and is lighter.

What is korenwijn?

The heaviest type: at least fifty-one per cent malt wine. Full and grainy, often aged on oak, and the closest relative of whisky.

Is bessenjenever also jenever?

Strictly speaking it is a liqueur: jenever in which berries have steeped, with added sugar.

How do you serve jenever?

At cellar temperature in a tulip glass instead of ice-cold from a small jenever glass.

Does ’t Bockje ship jenever abroad?

Yes, to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you would like to know whether your country is included.
