Bessenjenever is strictly speaking not jenever but a liqueur: jenever in which blackcurrants have steeped, with sugar added. The alcohol percentage is therefore lower, usually around fifteen to twenty percent.
It is one of the few drinks that has a real place of its own in the Netherlands: at a funeral, on the ice, or simply as something sweet after dinner. Lemon jenever works the same way.
Serve cold, from the fridge or even from the freezer.
Bessenjenever is actually a liqueur. That immediately explains why it is so much lighter.

What is the difference between jonge and old jenever?
That is not about age but about the recipe. Oude jenever has more malt wine and is fuller and grainier; jonge jenever has a more neutral base and is lighter and drier.
How do you serve jenever?
At cellar temperature in a tulip glass rather than ice-cold from a traditional jenever shot glass. Then you taste the grain and the botanicals.
