What makes something a liqueur?

A liqueur is a distilled spirit with flavour and sugar. The sugar is decisive: there has to be a good amount of it, which is why liqueurs are softer and sweeter than the spirit they are built on.
The base can be almost anything. Jenever for a Dutch berry liqueur, whisky for a creamy liqueur, brandy for many herbal bitters, and rum or neutral spirit for fruit liqueurs. As a result, the alcohol percentage is usually lower than for straight spirits: often between fifteen and thirty per cent.
Practical tip: most liqueurs keep for months after opening, but creamy liqueurs made with milk or cream belong in the fridge once opened and are at their best within six months.
Creamy liqueurs belong in the fridge once opened. The rest can simply stay in the cupboard.

How long does liqueur keep after opening?
Most liqueurs keep for months in the cupboard. Creamy liqueurs with milk or cream belong in the fridge and are at their best within about six months.
Why is liqueur less strong than ordinary spirits?
Because sugar and flavourings are added, which dilutes the alcohol. Most liqueurs are between fifteen and thirty per cent.
