Apricots from the Jordaan
Boerenmeisjes are apricots on brandy, the counterpart of the boerenjongens with raisins. They belong to the same Dutch custom: a jar on the table on a holiday, with a spoon beside it.
According to the producer, Van Wees puts selected apricots in it, on brandy with liqueur. That brings this jar to fifteen percent, slightly higher than most others on our shelf.
The maker is A. van Wees, distillery De Ooievaar in Amsterdam's Jordaan. It is one of the few places in the Netherlands where this kind of thing is still done by hand.
There is much more from Van Wees with us: more than ten other bottles, from old jenever and kraamanijs to a gin and an arak.

Boerenjongens of boerenmeisjes?
The difference is in the fruit: raisins versus apricots. Otherwise the idea is the same. Traditionally they come to the table at birthdays and holidays; in pancake houses you come across them as a topping.
