Why here

Two herbs, nothing more

Where most modern gins put ten to twenty botanicals in the still, Three Corner Dry Gin sticks to two: juniper and lemon. That is not a cost-cutting measure but a choice: it is the gin as it looked when the Dutch recipe arrived in England and was adapted there.

It comes from A. van Wees, distillery De Ooievaar on the Driehoekstraat in the Jordaan. That is the last artisanal distillery Amsterdam still has.

About the distillery

The last distillery in Amsterdam

  • The house in brief
  • 1782The year that distillery De Ooievaar bears.
  • 1883The Van Wees family is added.
  • JordaanDriehoekstraat, Amsterdam.
  • CopperThe stills in which the distilling is done.

Distillery De Ooievaar is in the Jordaan and dates back to 1782; the Van Wees family has run it since the late nineteenth century. The house mainly makes genever and liqueurs, in copper stills and on a small scale.

The name Three Corner refers to the Driehoekstraat where the distillery stands. The recipe refers to the seventeenth century, when the Dutch genever recipe crossed the North Sea with William III and was adapted in England with lemon.

What you get is therefore not a modern herbal gin but a bottle that stays close to its origins: juniper up front, lemon behind it.

The name comes from the Driehoekstraat, where the distillery has stood for centuries.

Practical

What this gin is meant for

A gin with two botanicals leaves little room to hide. In a gin and tonic with a neutral tonic, the juniper comes through undiminished.

For those who know jenever, this is the logical bridge: the same starting point, but drier and with lemon added.

The bottle is half a litre. Call +31 570 541 278 if you would like to know whether more is coming in.
