Why here

Where the name comes from

Bumbu was the name seventeenth-century sailors gave to their rum ration when they added fruit and spices to make it drinkable. The brand draws on that.

According to the producer, the cane comes from eight countries (Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guyana and Honduras) and is brought together in Barbados, with water filtered through the island's coral rock.

Sweet or dry?

Bumbu is distinctly smooth and sweetish; vanilla and caramel come first. That makes it accessible for those not yet used to rum, but it is not the bottle for anyone looking for a dry, austere rum. If that is the case, just say so and we will point you to something else.

About the brand

The rum island as home base

  • The brand in brief
  • BarbadosWhere the rum is blended.
  • 8Countries that supply cane.
  • Ex-bourbonThe casks from Kentucky.
  • GrogWhat the name goes back to.

Barbados is regarded as the place where rum originated as a category; the island is built of coral limestone, so the groundwater is naturally filtered. That water goes into the rum.

According to the producer, the rum ages for up to fifteen years in ex-bourbon casks from Kentucky. That age refers to the oldest component of the blend, not to the whole bottle.

The XO is the more aged of the two. Both bottles are distinctly flavoured and owe their popularity to that.

Bumbu was the spiced drink sailors made from their ration.

Where best to start

The Original is the best known and the bottle most people start with.

The XO is fuller and more mature; you are more likely to drink it neat or over ice.
