Chapter 01 · What you taste

Colour says less than you think

Rum is distilled from sugar cane: from molasses or from freshly pressed cane juice. White, gold and dark are not fixed styles; colour can come from the cask or from caramel, and white rum is sometimes aged and then filtered. What you do taste is the tradition of the island: heavy and aromatic, or light and dry.

Chapter 02 · The raw material

Fresh cane juice or molasses

Rhum agricole is made from freshly pressed cane juice, mainly on Martinique and Guadeloupe, and tastes grassy and vegetal. The rest of the world distils from molasses, the syrup left over from making sugar; that turns out rounder and sweeter. Cachaça from Brazil is also made from fresh cane juice, with its own rules and its own name.

Chapter 03 · Heavy or light

Heavy and dark, or light and dry

Jamaica and Guyana are known for the heavy style: long fermentation, lots of esters, an aroma you can smell from a metre away. Often from a pot still. Cuba and the Spanish tradition go the other way: light and dry, distilled in a column and meant for mixing. The difference already arises during fermentation.

Chapter 04 · The origin

The origin on the label

Jamaica, Cuba, Barbados and the Dominican Republic each have their own tradition; Barbados is regarded as one of the oldest rum islands. European houses also bottle rum distilled elsewhere, with a Dutch or British address on the label. To know the real origin, look at the distillery.

Chapter 05 · The age

A number is not necessarily an age

There is no worldwide rule on age for rum. A number on the label may refer to the youngest rum, but also to an average, a recipe or the oldest cask in the blend. With a solera, the number says something about the system. And in the tropics, far more evaporates each year than in Europe.

Briefly explained

The four faces of rum

  • Styles at a glance
  • Spanish styleCuba, Venezuela, Panama: light and smooth.
  • English styleJamaica, Barbados, Guyana: full and heavy.
  • Rhum agricoleMartinique: from fresh juice, grassy and dry.
  • BottlersSingle casks, small batches, often at cask strength.

Almost all rum is made from molasses, the syrupy residue left over from making cane sugar. The exception is rhum agricole from the French islands: it is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice, and you taste that straight away: grassy, dry and far less sweet.

The most important warning with rum concerns sugar. In some countries sugar may be added after distillation, sometimes tens of grams per litre. That makes a rum soft and approachable, but it also masks things. If you want to taste the rum itself, look for brands that do not do this. We are happy to tell you which ones they are.

And watch out for age statements: in many countries the number may refer to the average age of the casks used, or even to the oldest. That is different from whisky, where it is always the youngest.

With whisky, the age statement refers to the youngest drop in the bottle. With rum, that is far from always the case.

Frequently asked questions

About our rum range

How much rum does ’t Bockje have?

431 verschillende rums van 109 merken. Dat aantal wisselt; er komen regelmatig nieuwe flessen bij.

What is the difference between rum and rhum agricole?

Ordinary rum is distilled from molasses, the residue left over from making cane sugar. Rhum agricole from the French islands is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice: grassy, dry and less sweet.

Does rum contain sugar?

Sometimes. In a number of countries sugar may be added after distillation, which makes the rum smoother but also masks it. We will gladly tell you which brands do not do this.

Does an age on a rum bottle mean the same as on whisky?

Not always. With whisky the number refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle; with rum, in many countries it may be the average or even the oldest.

Which rum is best for a cocktail?

A light Spanish-style rum or a white rum. A heavy, aged rum is wasted in a mojito; that one is for pouring neat.

Can I order a rum that is not listed?

Often, yes. Pass on the name by phone or email; if we can get it, we will let you know.

Does ’t Bockje ship rum abroad?

Yes, to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you would like to know whether your country is included.
