Why here

From by-product to bottle

Discarded is the name of a series in which a leftover product is always the starting point. Here it is the banana peel: what normally ends up in the bin is processed into an extract and added to the rum.

The rum underneath is Caribbean rum that was originally used to season empty whisky casks at William Grant & Sons. That, too, is a second life for something that already existed.

  • 70 clVolume.

Banana peel as an extract gives toffee notes with a fruity balance. The brand mentions flavours of banoffee pie and sticky toffee pudding, with the deep fruitiness of milk chocolate raisins and a crystallised ginger finish.

Rumour has it that it tastes like liquid banana bread. Whether that is true, we leave you to discover for yourself.

At 37.5 percent this bottle is below the strength of most rum. That fits the use: it comes into its own mainly in cocktails and long drinks.

The rumour goes that it tastes like liquid banana bread.

Practical

What this bottle goes with

A fruity rum like this one works well in a daiquiri with a twist, in a tiki-style cocktail or simply with some ice and a splash of sparkling water.

Also a nice gift for someone who already has enough ordinary bottles.
