Why here

Single estate: everything from one place

Single estate means that the sugar cane comes from the producer's own plantation and is also processed there. At Lazy Dodo on Mauritius it concerns molasses from its own land, after which the rum matures in oak casks.

The flavour profile leans towards caramel, vanilla, wood and tropical fruit. So not a rough, extremely strong rum, but an elegant and approachable one.

The dodo is the flightless bird that occurred only on Mauritius and became extinct there. The animal has since become the symbol of the island; you will find it everywhere there, on coins, coats of arms and so also on bottles.

Mauritius lies in the Indian Ocean and has a sugar cane history going back centuries. Rum from the island comes in two styles: from molasses and from fresh cane juice. This one is made from molasses.

If you are looking for something with a sweeter, more approachable style, this is a bottle that does its job both neat and in a cocktail.

More elegant than rough, more accessible than challenging.

Practical

What this bottle goes with

Neat, with ice or in a cocktail where the rum may well contribute some sweetness. A rum and tonic or a daiquiri works very well.

For anyone who does not yet know rum from the Indian Ocean, this is a nice introduction alongside the usual Caribbean fare.
