Why here

Two bottles that have nothing to do with each other

The Elixir de Cuba is no ordinary rum. It is 34 percent, sweet and almost creamy in structure, with raisin, chocolate and vanilla. In Cuba it is a drink in its own right and in the Netherlands often the bottle people are surprised by.

The nine-year-old Añejo is the opposite: an ordinary aged Cuban rum that you drink neat or in a cocktail.

What is Elixir de Cuba?

A sweetened rum specialty: rum to which sugar and raisin have been added, making the drink thick and sweet. It is served chilled or over ice, and sometimes as a dessert drink. So do not expect a dry rum; it deliberately is not one.

Legendario is a well-known name in Cuba, mainly because of the Elixir. That bottle belongs to a category that barely exists in the Netherlands: rum so sweet and thick that it is drunk more like a liqueur.

The nine-year-old Añejo stands apart from it. That is a classic aged Cuban rum, the way you expect it from the island.

If you would like the better-known Cuban names alongside it, look under Havana Club and Ron Cubay.

The Elixir is drunk chilled. It is thicker than you would expect.
