Why here

Rum from the Philippines

The Philippines is a major rum country, little of which reaches Europe. Tanduay is one of the best-known names there, and we have two bottles of it.

The two are very different. The Gold is a seven-year-old from the solera system, the Double Rum is a blend of a five-year-old and a sixteen-year-old that then received two more years.

About the two

Double and Gold side by side

  • The difference in brief
  • GoldSeven years, solera system, ex-bourbon.
  • DoubleA blend of five and sixteen years.
  • +2 yearsAfter blending, the Double goes back into cask.
  • 40%Both bottles.

Tanduay Gold is a dark rum aged for seven years using the solera system, in ex-bourbon casks. In a solera, younger and older rums are blended step by step, so the style stays consistent over the years.

The Double Rum is a rich, engaging blend of five- and sixteen-year-old rums. The five-year-old, which has won prizes several times, is combined with the rarest rum from sixteen-year-old casks.

After blending, that combination goes back into casks to mature for another two years. Two rums, then, hence the name Double Rum.

Two rums, blended and then put back in cask for another two years.

Practical

Which of the two

The Gold is the most accessible of the two: a dark rum that works neat, on ice and in a long drink.

The Double Rum is the bottle to sip neat in peace, precisely because of the sixteen-year-old component and the extra maturation after blending.
