The Tres Hombres is a brigantine from 1943, rediscovered in Delft in 2007 and restored by the Dutch shipping company Fairtransport. The ship has no engine: all cargo it carries arrives on wind power alone.
The rum is loaded at, among other places, La Palma, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Martinique and Marie-Galante, and continues to mature in the cask on board during the crossing. Every bottling gets an edition number; two editions are therefore rarely the same.

What is the Captain’s Choice?
The range in which the captain selects a single cask or a single vintage. These bottles come in smaller quantities, often at higher strength, and disappear when they are gone.
A brigantine from 1943, without an engine
- The ship in brief
- 1943The year the ship was built.
- 2007Fairtransport is founded and the ship is restored.
- 40 tonnesThe loading capacity.
- Wind forceThe only drive.
Fairtransport was set up in 2007 by Jorne Langelaan, Arjen van der Veen and Andreas Lackner, with the idea that cargo can cross the ocean without fuel. The ship they restored for this was a brigantine from 1943.
The Tres Hombres sails every year between Europe and the Caribbean and carries rum, cocoa and coffee, among other things. There is no engine on board; if the wind is against it, the voyage takes longer.
The rum goes aboard in the cask and keeps maturing during the crossing. The brand calls that ocean aged: the movement of the ship and the changing temperature do their work in the cask.
No engine on board: if the wind is against them, the journey takes longer.
Where best to start
The 20-centilitre bottles are there for trying out. Handy, because every edition is different and you cannot know beforehand which one suits you best.
If you want to taste the character of a single island, choose an edition from La Palma, Barbados or Marie-Galante and put them side by side.
The Captain’s Choice bottles are the rarest. Call 0570 541 278 if you want to know what is currently on the shelf.
