Bottle of Oban 14 Years Old Highland Malt, whisky

From the shelf

The bottle

Oban lies on the west coast of the Highlands, in the middle of the town after which the distillery is named. This fourteen-year-old matured in oak casks and is bottled at 43% vol. It is saline by nature, with vanilla and honey underneath and a dry finish in which the salt returns.

The combination

Why this works together

The Siglo I is short and moderate in strength, with a creamy, lightly grassy smoke. Salt brings smoke forward, and the brininess of the Oban works as that amplifier here. Because the cigar is finished in half an hour, 43 percent ABV is more than enough.

Beside the glass

The cigar

We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

  • Cohiba Siglo I The shortest size in the Siglo range, 102 mm, light to medium; creamy and just robust enough alongside the salty.
  • Cohiba Siglo II Slightly longer, same house style; the choice if you have a little more time.
  • Quai d’Orsay No. 50 Short Cuban robusto of moderate strength, with a soft, woody character.
  • Rafael González Perlas One of the mildest short Cubans; let the salt in the whisky do the work.

In the glass

Serving

Neat, in a tulip glass, without ice. At 43% ABV you can add a few drops of water if the salt comes across too sharp. Taste first without smoke and take each sip after the smoke has left the mouth.
