Vermouth is wine, not a spirit

Vermouth is wine with herbs and a dash of alcohol, usually around fifteen to eighteen per cent. Wormwood is always included: the German Wermut literally means wormwood, and that is where the name comes from.
Because it is wine, the most important rule for wine also applies: keep it in the fridge after opening and finish it within a few weeks. A bottle that has stood in the drinks cabinet for months has gone flat. That is the most common mistake with vermouth.
Neat with a slice of orange and plenty of ice is, by the way, at least as good as in a cocktail.
Vermouth is wine. Keep it in the fridge after opening and finish it within a few weeks.
