Why here

What is and isn't said

This is not its own distillate. The whisky comes from a Highland distillery that may not be named; the founder has said publicly that a non-disclosure agreement forbids it. We therefore do not name a name and do not guess either.

What the house does do itself: marrying two carefully chosen casks per release, usually one peated and one unpeated, and then finishing the whole for about another six months in its own coastal warehouse. That produces a lightly peated whisky, at forty-six percent, in small batches.

Bad na h-Achlaise is a Gaelic place name from the immediate surroundings: there is a small loch of that name close to the village. It is not, as is sometimes thought, simply the Gaelic for Badachro; that is a different name with a different origin.

The distillery itself is small and run by a married couple. They make gin, vodka and rum, and their own malt whisky is still maturing. Until it is ready, bought-in whisky that they finish themselves is released under this label.

Print runs vary widely: from a few thousand bottles to releases of just a few dozen. The finishes you will come across include Madeira, ruby port, rum and Tuscan red wine wood.

One peated and one unpeated cask, and then another half year.

Practical

What these bottles go with

Lightly peated: the smoke is there, but not up front. Pleasant for those who find Islay goes too far.

No bottle has an age on it. Judge it by what is in the glass.

How much Bad na h-Achlaise does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles.

Which distillery is this from?

That is not made public. It is Highland malt, but the founder is contractually bound to secrecy. We make no statement on that.

Who is behind it?

Badachro Distillery, a small family distillery near Gairloch in Wester Ross, on the north-west coast of Scotland.

So what does happen at Badachro?

For each release two casks are married, usually one peated and one unpeated, and the whole then matures for about another six months in the distillery's own warehouse.

What does the name mean?
