Why here

Where the blending industry became technically possible

Cameronbridge lies near Windygates in Fife and was founded in 1824 by John Haig. From 1830 it was one of the first distilleries to make grain whisky with a column still. That light, continuously distilled spirit is the backbone of almost every Scottish blend.

Since 1929 only grain whisky has been distilled there; before that, malt too. And since 1998 the grain alcohol for Gordon’s, Tanqueray and Smirnoff has also been produced there, which then moved from London to Fife.

About the name

Cameronbridge and Cameron Brig

  • The distillery in brief
  • 1824Founded by John Haig.
  • 1830One of the first with a column still.
  • 1929From here on, only grain whisky.
  • 1998Also gin and vodka base from Fife.

Cameronbridge is the name of the distillery; Cameron Brig is the brand name of the official single grain that comes out of it, at forty percent. They are not two houses but two names for the same address.

The Haig family goes a long way back. The first trace dates from 1655, when Robert Haig had to answer to the church council because he had distilled on a Sunday. John Haig & Co was absorbed in 1877 into the Distillers Company Limited, which took over the distillery completely in 1919; via United Distillers it came to Diageo in 1997.

Little is released under its own name. By far most bottles called Cameronbridge come from independent bottlers: vintage bottlings from casks they have bought. There is no visitor centre; this is a factory, not a day out.

Without grain whisky from stills like these there would be no Scotch blend at all.

Practical

What to look out for

The bottles are single bottlings. What is gone does not come back, and the next one is a different cask.

Grain whisky of this age is something different from malt of the same age; the cask has proportionally more influence.

Frequently asked questions about Cameronbridge

How much Cameronbridge does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Two bottles.

What is the difference between Cameronbridge and Cameron Brig?

Cameronbridge is the distillery, Cameron Brig is the brand name of the official single grain. Two names for the same house.

Does Cameronbridge make single malt?

No. Since 1929 only grain whisky has been distilled there.

Who owns the distillery?

Owned by Diageo. It ended up there in 1997, via the Distillers Company Limited and United Distillers.

Why do you see almost only bottlings by others?
