Scotland’s invisible workhorse
Most of every blended Scotch is grain whisky: distilled in column stills, usually from wheat or maize, lighter than malt whisky. Almost nobody ever gets to taste it neat, because hardly any grain whisky is released under its own name.
The Grainman does nothing else. Single casks, often forgotten for decades, at cask strength, with no colouring and no chill filtration. The result is a surprisingly sweet, creamy whisky with plenty of vanilla and coconut, very different from a malt of the same age.

Father and son in Glasgow
- The brand in brief
- 1964Donald Hart starts out in the whisky trade.
- 1998He becomes Keeper of the Quaich.
- 2011Meadowside Blending is founded.
- 2016The Grainman launched, in January.
Behind The Grainman is Meadowside Blending in Glasgow, run by father and son Hart. Donald Hart has been trading in whisky since 1964, was co-founder of a well-known bottler and became a Keeper of the Quaich in 1998. His son Andrew does the cask selection.
In addition to The Grainman, the house has The Maltman for single malts. That explains the set-up: two brands, two categories, the same method.
The names on the labels come back from a small group of grain distilleries: Invergordon, Cameronbridge, North British, Girvan, Strathclyde. Alongside them Port Dundas and Dumbarton, which are closed. What of those is still in circulation comes from casks that were already there.
The whisky that is in every blend and is rarely served neat.
What these bottles go with
Old grain whisky is a category of its own, with a texture all its own. Anyone who wants to try a thirty-year-old whisky does well to start here.
Put a malt of comparable age next to it; the difference in texture and sweetness is immediately clear.
