Why here

"Closed" is too weak a word here

At most mothballed distilleries the building still exists and production could in theory restart. Not at Caperdonich. The plant shut down in 2002 and the complex was demolished in 2010 and 2011.

Only one warehouse is still standing, which has since become part of the Forsyths copper works in Rothes. The stills have been reused: one pair went to The Belgian Owl, the rest to Falkirk. New Caperdonich can therefore no longer exist.

Official bottlings were rare during the years of operation; most went into blends. What you see here comes largely from independent bottlers.

About the distillery

Once Glen Grant number two

  • A brief history
  • Glen Grant No. 2This is how it began, at the end of the nineteenth century.
  • Over 60 yearsThat is how long everything stood still after the first closure.
  • 1965Rebuilt and reopened under a new name.
  • 2002Permanently shut down.

Caperdonich was built as Glen Grant’s second installation, across the road, with the same water and the same barley and with the aim of making the same whisky. The spirit was pumped through a pipe over the public road to Glen Grant. In practice it turned out not to be identical after all, and it is precisely that difference that makes the name interesting to enthusiasts.

After an operating period of only four years the distillery closed in the early twentieth century and stayed silent for well over sixty years. Only in 1965 was it rebuilt and reopened. The name then had to change, because two distilleries operating at the same time were not allowed to carry the same name.

The link with Glen Grant is often stretched too far. It ran in parallel for a long time, but in 2005 and 2006 the paths parted: Glen Grant went to Campari, Caperdonich stayed with Chivas Brothers. Since then they have been two different houses.

Not mothballed, but demolished. Nothing more will be added.

Practical

What these bottles go with

Drink it neat, slowly, in a small glass. You do not drink a bottle from a demolished distillery just for the sake of a good time.

Peated spirit has also been made, which was unusual for the region. Ask in the shop what is in stock at the moment.

Call 0570 541 278 or drop in at Brink 2 in Bathmen if you would like to talk it over.
