Why here

Whisky from Overijssel barley

Kalkwijck Distillers is located on the Tonnendijk in Vroomshoop, municipality of Twenterand. Lisanne Benus founded the company in 2009, since 2016 together with Christian Broekhuizen. The first Eastmoor appeared in 2015.

It is a farm distillery: the barley comes from its own arable farm of about forty hectares. Besides barley, rye and corn are grown in a one-in-three rotation, plus two hectares of organic rye. The malting is done at a Belgian maltings.

The range

The bottles we have in stock

Eastmoor appears in numbered batches, each with its own cask programme. Two batches therefore do not taste the same.

About the name

The east of the peat bog

  • How we work, in brief
  • VroomshoopMunicipality of Twenterand, Overijssel.
  • 40 hectaresOwn arable farm.
  • BelgiumWhere the malting takes place.
  • BatchesNumbered, with changing casks.

The name refers to the eastern peat area of Overijssel, a former peat-extraction area. Vroomshoop lies right in the middle of it.

The batches differ widely in cask choice: American oak, European oak, oloroso, moscatel, amarone and peated casks. Batch 8 from 2022 was triple distilled and limited to 695 bottles; batch 9 comprised 952 bottles at 47 percent, not chill filtered. Batch 11 from 2025 is at 47.6 percent.

The distillery's range is broader than whisky alone: liqueurs, genevers and specialities are made too.

The barley grows next to the distillery.

What these bottles go with

For anyone who likes drinking something made close to home, this is one of the nicest bottles on our shelf. Vroomshoop is a little under an hour's drive from Bathmen.

Because the batches differ, it is worth asking which one is on the shelf at the moment and what the difference is.
