Why here

Who is behind it

Hamiltons is a brand of Angus Dundee Distillers, a family business from 1950 with a bottling plant in Coatbridge near Glasgow. The company owns two malt distilleries of its own: Tomintoul in Speyside since 2000 and Glencadam in the eastern Highlands since 2003.

The range has six versions, each for a Scottish region. The distilleries behind the bottles are not disclosed, and that can hardly be otherwise: Angus Dundee has no distillery on Islay or in the Lowlands, so those two bottles by definition consist of whisky from other producers.

About the name

A name without a documented history

  • The company in brief
  • 1950Angus Dundee is founded.
  • CoatbridgeWhere the bottling plant is.
  • TomintoulOwn distillery since 2000.
  • GlencadamOwn distillery since 2003.

We looked for a historic whisky house called Hamilton and did not find one. No source, not even Angus Dundee itself, links the brand to an existing or vanished firm of that name. We therefore present it as what it is: a Scottish-sounding brand name.

That the distilleries are not named is usual with this kind of regional series. Producers buy and swap whisky with each other and are then not free to put those names on a label.

What you can judge is the difference between the regions. The Islay bottle is a blended malt and so is composed of several distilleries; the Lowland is a single malt and so comes from one house, we just do not know which.

One bottle per region, and no names on the label.

What these bottles go with

Putting two regions side by side is the nicest way to learn what a regional designation means.

There is no age on them; judge them by what is in the glass.

Frequently asked questions about Hamiltons

How many Hamiltons does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Two bottles.

Who makes Hamiltons?

Angus Dundee Distillers, a Scottish family business from 1950 with a bottling plant in Coatbridge near Glasgow.

Which distilleries are in it?

Those are not made public. We therefore name no names and make no guess.

Is the Islay bottle from an Islay distillery?

It is a blended malt from several distilleries. Angus Dundee has no distillery of its own on Islay, so this is whisky from other producers.

Was there a firm called Hamilton?

We found no source for that. We treat it as a brand name without documented history.
