What is in the bottle now
The distillery in Belfast has been running since April 2024, but its own distillate still has to mature: the first single malt of its own is expected in 2029. What is in the bottle now comes from Dundalk, from the Great Northern Distillery, where around nine thousand casks of McConnell’s were stored in 2024.
That is not a reproach but a fact you should know. The brand gives 1776 as the founding year of the Belfast house; independent documentation for it is thin, so we pass it on as a brand claim and not as an established fact.

- The brand in brief
- 2020The brand returns to the market.
- DundalkWhere the current whiskey comes from.
- 2024The distillery opens on 17 April.
- 2029When the first own single malt is expected.
The Crumlin Road Gaol was a prison for over a hundred and forty years and, during the Troubles, one of the most notorious buildings in Belfast. Since 17 April 2024 there have been copper stills in the A wing. It is the largest whiskey production in Belfast in almost ninety years, with a capacity of half a million litres of alcohol a year and a visitor centre.
The plan is to use a third of production for its own single malt, a third for long maturation and a third for sale to other blenders. Until then the whiskey in the bottle comes from Dundalk.
The label says Whisky without an e, while Irish whiskey is usually spelled with an e. That is a deliberate choice by the brand and not a typo.
Stills in a cell block, and the whiskey comes from Dundalk for the time being.
What these bottles go with
The five-year-old is an accessible Irish whiskey; the sherry and cognac finishes show well what a cask does with the same base.
Anyone who wants to compare can put an Irish whiskey next to it that does come from its own distillate.
