Why here

What we do and do not know

European labels say Japanese Whisky. What appears to be the same product, sold in the United States, says Japanese Style Whiskey and, below that, Product of Moldova. The two statements cannot be reconciled.

No distillery is named anywhere. We have not found any source that explains the difference or says where the distillate comes from. That is why we do not call Okami a Japanese whisky, nor a Moldovan one. What is on the bottle you buy, you can read for yourself on the label.

About the term

What pure malt means

  • The brand in brief
  • Pure maltFully malted barley, several origins.
  • 4, 8, 12The ages in the range.
  • EU labelJapanese Whisky.
  • VS labelProduct of Moldova.

Pure malt is a designation that has long been used in Japan for whisky made entirely from malted barley but possibly coming from more than one distillery. In Scotland that is called blended malt. So it is not a single malt.

The term says nothing about the country of origin. That is exactly where the problem lies here: the designation on the bottle concerns the contents, not the place where those contents were made.

Since 2021 the Japanese trade organisation has applied voluntary rules for what may be called Japanese Whisky. Those rules are not legally binding and do not apply outside Japan. Brands that do not meet them can still be on the shelves outside Japan with those words on the label.

What is not on the label, we do not make up.
