Why here

Rye from an unexpected corner

Most people know rye whisky from Kentucky and Canada. Central Europe is a less obvious corner, and that is exactly why it is interesting: the same grain, a different interpretation. These bottles are softer and fruitier than their American counterparts.

The house in Prostějov traces its history back to 1518, when brewing rights were granted to a group of burghers. Whether that line is unbroken cannot be independently established; we pass it on as the company presents it.

The range

The bottles we have in stock

A four-year-old reserve and a seven-year-old selection.

About the maturation

Four years, and for the best casks three more

  • The house in brief
  • ProstějovWhere it is made, in Moravia.
  • 1518The year the house refers to.
  • 4Year for the reserve.
  • 7Year of the selection.

The reserve matures for four years in white oak casks. For the seven-year selection a choice is then made: only the casks that please most continue for another three years. That explains the difference in price and in depth.

The cellars lie at a depth of about five metres, where the temperature stays stable all year round. That is the house's own statement; we pass it on as such.

No hard information can be found about who distils the rye spirit. Sources speak of carefully selected distillate. We therefore call it maturing and selecting in Prostějov, and not our own distillate.

Rye, but from Moravia.

Frequently asked questions about Old Hunter’s

How much Old Hunter’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles.

Where does Old Hunter’s come from?

From Prostějov in Moravia, Czechia. It is not a Hungarian brand, as is sometimes thought.

What is the difference between the reserve and the selection?

The reserve matures for four years. For the seven-year-old selection, only the best-performing casks then continue for another three years.

Is the year 1518 correct?

The house gives this as the start of its history, when brewing rights were granted. Whether that line is unbroken cannot be established independently.

Is this their own distillate?

That cannot be firmly established. Sources speak of selected rye distillate; we therefore stick to maturation and selection on site.
