Why here

What moonshine actually is

Moonshine is not a legal category in the United States; it is a sales name. What's inside differs per brand. At Ole Smoky the label of the original version says Tennessee corn whiskey: unaged, made from corn, at fifty per cent. So it may be called whiskey. What it may not be called is bourbon or Tennessee whiskey, because those require maturation in new charred oak.

The flavoured bottles are a separate category. They are labelled as flavored whiskey and are usually thirty per cent. It is emphatically not a traditional whiskey, and the house does not pretend otherwise.

About the house

From illegal to the tourist strip

  • The company in brief
  • 2010Founded in Gatlinburg.
  • TennesseeOn the edge of the Smoky Mountains.
  • CornThe base of the moonshine.
  • Mason jarWhat it traditionally goes in.

In the Appalachians, moonshine was for generations what people distilled because it was not allowed. In 2010 Ole Smoky turned that around and became Tennessee's first legal moonshine distillery, right in the middle of Gatlinburg's tourist strip.

The glass mason jar is a reference to how it used to be traded. What's inside is unaged corn spirit, without the years in cask that give a whiskey its colour and woody note. There is also a line of flavours, and for some years now a matured bourbon too.

Mind the spelling. The brand is called Ole Smoky, with a y and without an e, after the Smoky Mountains. Ole Smokey appears on some labels and in online shops; it is the same bottle.

Practical

What these bottles go with

Moonshine drinks differently from whisky: no wood, no colour, and much more direct. A small glass, and not as a substitute for a single malt.

The flavoured bottles are often used in cocktails or over ice. Ask in the shop what is in stock at the moment.
