Why here

Three kinds in one blend

Paddy is one of the few Irish blends that combines all three Irish distillate types: grain whiskey, malt whiskey and pot still whiskey. Everything is triple distilled and matured in three kinds of oak casks. The proportion is not published.

For well over a century the brand belonged to Cork and later to Irish Distillers in Midleton. On 17 May 2016 Pernod Ricard sold it to the American Sazerac, in order to focus on Jameson and Powers. In 2022 Sazerac bought its own Irish distillery in County Sligo. Where the whiskey in a specific bottle comes from cannot be determined from the outside.

Patrick J. O’Flaherty was a sales representative for the Cork Distilleries Company for forty years. He travelled on foot, by carriage and by train past the pubs of southern Ireland.

He was so good at his trade and so generous with rounds that publicans no longer asked for the firm’s whiskey but for Paddy’s whiskey. The company put his name on it: on the label.

So it is not a general nickname for an Irishman but a specific man. Paddy has long been regarded as one of the best-selling Irish whiskeys in the world; at the time of the sale in 2016 the brand ranked fourth.

They did not ask for the firm, they asked for Paddy.
