Why here

Why there is a colour on it

Mitchell & Son was a Dublin wine merchant and sent its empty sherry and port casks to the distillery on Bow Street, had them filled there and laid them down to mature in its own cellars. Each cask got a dab of paint indicating how long it had to stay: blue for seven years, green for ten, yellow for twelve and red for fifteen.

Only the green dot survived the twentieth century. The other three have only been brought back in the last fifteen years. The whiskey has come from Midleton in County Cork since 1971; the family has now been involved with the brand for seven generations.

About the wine casks

An Irish family in Bordeaux

  • A brief history
  • 1805Mitchell & Son starts out on Grafton Street.
  • 1887The first own casks at the distillery.
  • 1971Production is moving to Midleton.
  • 2012–2022Yellow, red, blue and gold return.

Green Spot is a single pot still whiskey: distilled from a mixture of malted and unmalted barley, an Irish speciality. The standard bottle carries no age statement and is composed of whiskeys from seven to ten years old, matured in ex-bourbon and sherry casks.

The version finished in casks from Château Léoville Barton in Saint-Julien appeared in 2015 and closes a circle. That wine house is owned by a family descended from an Irish merchant who settled in Bordeaux in 1725: one of the Wine Geese, Irishmen who went into wine in France.

There is also a version finished in Zinfandel casks from Château Montelena in Napa Valley. Both go into the bottle at forty-six percent, where the standard bottle is at forty.

A dab of green paint on the cask, and that became the brand.

Practical

What these bottles go with

Single pot still is the Irish speciality par excellence: creamy and peppery at the same time. Green Spot is a classic way in.

The wine cask expressions are clearly different and stronger; good to put one next to the standard bottle.
