Why this name carries so much weight
Silvano Samaroli started a trading house in Rome in 1968 and then did something that was unthinkable at the time: as a non-Briton, selecting Scottish casks himself and bottling them under his own label. He is regarded as the first independent bottler of Scotch whisky from outside Great Britain.
In the 1980s he carried on where the industry did not dare: cask strength, no chill filtration, no colouring. He designed his own labels. The Bowmore 1966 that he released in 1984 in seven hundred and twenty bottles is still regarded today as one of the best whiskies ever bottled.

A Roman who picked out Scottish casks
- A brief history
- 1968The trading house founded in Rome.
- The 1980sPioneer of cask strength and no chill-filtration.
- 2008Antonio Bleve takes over the day-to-day management.
- 2017Silvano Samaroli dies.
Bottling took place in Scotland, for a long time through a house in Aberdeen. The labels carried the line that the whisky goes on maturing in the bottle, a view you rarely come across so explicitly with other bottlers.
Since 2008, Antonio Bleve has run the day-to-day business; Silvano Samaroli remained involved until his death in 2017. Besides whisky, the company also bottles rum, and it is still based in Rome.
Some labels say Ardenistle. That was once a real distillery on Islay, active in the nineteenth century and later absorbed by its neighbour. Samaroli uses the name as a series name for changing blended malts; the composition differs per edition and is not consistently disclosed. We therefore do not state a fixed origin.
Cask strength and no chill filtration, when nobody else did.
What these bottles go with
