Why here

Five times the same Highland blend

Timorous Beastie is a blended malt: malt whisky only, from several Highland distilleries, with no grain whisky mixed in. Douglas Laing regularly releases separate editions of it with a different finish, and these disappear again afterwards.

We have five of them: the standard bottle, a ten-year-old and three editions (two from the Cheese Cellar Collection and a peated one on a crocodile cask). If you don't know which one to get, give us a call. That's what we're here for.

Our range of Timorous Beastie

Five bottles, from the regular bottling to a peated edition at cask strength.

About the series

A mouse from a poem by Burns

  • The range in three facts
  • 1948the year Douglas Laing started in Glasgow.
  • Highlandsthe region where all the malts in this blend come from.
  • 0grain whisky: it is a blended malt.

Timorous Beastie comes from Douglas Laing & Co of Glasgow, the same house that makes XOP, Big Peat and The Epicurean. It is not a distillery but a bottler and blender: buying in casks, putting them together and releasing them under its own name.

The name comes from To a Mouse by Robert Burns, in which the poet addresses a mouse as wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim’rous beastie. For a Scotch blended malt, that is a nod that needs little explanation.

Where The Epicurean comes from the Lowlands, Timorous Beastie draws on the Highlands. Around that fixed base appear individual editions: two from the Cheese Cellar Collection and a peated one at cask strength are here.

A blended malt contains no grain whisky. With Timorous Beastie, all the malts also come from the Highlands.
