Why here

About the year on the label

The bottle says 1849. That year is hard to reconcile with what is known about William Lawson himself: reference sources place his birth between 1853 and 1859, and the first registered firm in his name dates from 1899. We therefore pass on 1849 as something the brand uses, not as an established founding year.

What can be justified is the whisky itself. The owner has owned the Macduff distillery on the Deveron in Aberdeenshire since 1972, and that malt is the heart of the blend. Under its own name the same whisky appears as Glen Deveron or The Deveron.

About the brand

Big in France, small here

  • The brand in brief
  • 1899The first registered firm in his name.
  • 1963The brand gets its current name.
  • 1972The Macduff distillery is being bought.
  • DeveronThe river on which that distillery lies.

William Lawson’s is the great unknown of Scotch whisky. In the Netherlands you hardly come across it, but worldwide it sells millions of cases a year, mainly in France, Southern Europe and Eastern Europe.

The blending and bottling moved over time from Dublin to Liverpool, then to Lanarkshire and finally to Glasgow. In 1963 the brand got its current name, to avoid confusion with another blend.

Macduff, the distillery behind the blend, was built around 1960 and came into the hands of the brand in 1972. It is in Banff in Aberdeenshire, in the Highlands, although the border with Speyside is close by.

A blend where you know exactly which distillery is behind it.

Practical

What these bottles go with

A blend for every day. The thirteen-year-old is a pleasant step up without you ending up in the pricier corner.

If you want to know what is in it, you can put a Macduff bottling next to it; that is the same malt under its own name.

Frequently asked questions about William Lawson’s

How many William Lawson’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles.

Is the year 1849 on the bottle correct?

That cannot be substantiated. William Lawson’s year of birth is placed between 1853 and 1859, and the first firm in his name dates from 1899. We therefore cite 1849 as a brand claim.

Which distillery is behind it?

Macduff, on the River Deveron in Banff, Aberdeenshire. It has been owned by the brand owner since 1972.

Is this a single malt?

No, it is a blend of malt whisky and grain whisky.

Where can I taste that malt neat?

Under the name Glen Deveron or The Deveron, and from independent bottlers under the name Macduff.

Can I collect these bottles in Bathmen?
