About the brand

Named after a line of latitude

  • The brand in brief
  • 42° zuidThe latitude on which New Zealand lies, and where the name comes from.
  • WellingtonThe city where Geoff Ross started the brand.
  • WheatNon-GMO wheat as the base, with New Zealand spring water.
  • 2006Bacardi takes over the brand.

42 Below comes from New Zealand and was started by Geoff Ross, with Wellington as its home base. The name refers to the 42nd parallel south, the line the country lies on. That location and the water that goes with it have been central to how the brand presents itself from the start.

The base is non-GMO wheat. It is distilled in four columns and brought down to strength with New Zealand spring water. The bottle was originally 42 percent, another nod to the name, and is now 40 worldwide.

In December 2006, Bacardi took over the brand.

The 42nd parallel south runs straight through New Zealand. That is where the name comes from.
