Most shops only have the regular Crystal Head. We have four: the original, the black Onyx and two editions released in a limited run. A few of those last two are still available right now; that is the normal course of events with bottles like these.

Crystal Head began in September 2008 as an idea of actor Dan Aykroyd and artist John Alexander. Alexander designed the bottle: a glass skull, inspired by the legend of the thirteen crystal skulls. That bottle is the brand at a glance and the reason it stands in so many cabinets.
Behind the design is a fairly sober production. The vodka is made from sweet corn and distilled four times. It then passes through a filter seven times, the last three over Herkimer diamonds: not real diamonds, but clear quartz crystals from Herkimer County in New York State. The brand adds nothing (no glycerol, no citrus oil, no sugar), and in the vodka segment that is less self-evident than it sounds.
The Onyx falls outside that series. It is not based on grain but on blue Weber agave from a single farm in Mexico, diluted with water from Newfoundland. The bottle is black instead of clear.
What are Herkimer diamonds?
They are quartz crystals from Herkimer County in the American state of New York, which naturally have a point on both ends and therefore look like cut diamond. It is a semi-precious stone, not diamond. Crystal Head runs the vodka over them in the last three filtration steps.
Which Crystal Head is which?
- The original is the corn-based vodka in the clear skull bottle.
- Paint Your Pride contains the same vodka as the original; the difference is in the bottle, which has been given a ceramic coating.
- Onyx is the only one with a different raw material: blue Weber agave instead of grain.
- Rainbow Edition is released annually in a limited run.
