Alcohol-free from a family brewery
The alcohol-free shelf is dominated by the big names. Budels is the exception: a family brewery from Budel in Noord-Brabant that has existed since 1870 and is now run by the fourth generation of the Arts family.
The brewery itself lists twenty-four beers in its range, fifteen of them organic and five non-alcoholic. The Malt 0.0 appears in both lists: it is non-alcoholic and the brewery includes it among its organic beers.
According to the description in our online shop, the character of this beer comes from a separate fermentation, a mild hop addition and soft spring water. The supplier recommends serving it well chilled, between three and five degrees.

Four generations in Budel
- Budels in brief
- 1870The year that the Budelse Brouwerij itself carries.
- 4eThe generation of the Arts family that now runs the brewery.
- 24Beers in the range, of which 15 are organic.
- 5Alcohol-free beers, including the Malt 0.0.
The Budelse Brouwerij is on the Nieuwstraat in Budel, in the south-east of Noord-Brabant. The brewery calls itself a family brewery and gives 1870 as its starting year; it is currently run by the fourth generation of the Arts family.
Organic beer has long been part of the story there. Of the twenty-four beers the brewery lists, fifteen are organic, and five are alcohol-free. The Malt 0.0 belongs to both groups.
For the non-alcoholic shelf, that is what makes this bottle special. Most 0.0 beers come from the big brewers; this one comes from a small family business.
Five alcohol-free beers and fifteen organic ones, from a brewery in Budel.
What exactly does 0.0 mean?
In the Netherlands the rules state when alcohol-free may appear on a label. The Warenwetbesluit gereserveerde aanduidingen allows that designation at no more than 0.1 per cent alcohol. If there is more in it, up to and including 1.2 per cent, it is called low-alcohol.
The designation 0.0 does not appear separately in those rules. Brewers put it on the label themselves for beer that stays below the alcohol-free limit. Budels does this with the Malt 0.0.
So look at the figure and not just the word. A beer of 0.3 per cent (you see them more and more often) may not legally call itself alcohol-free beer; that is low-alcohol beer.
With beer from abroad you also need to pay attention. Designations such as alkoholfrei or alcohol free follow the rules of the country of origin, and that limit is not set at the same point everywhere.
