About the brand

From Frankfurt to Dortmund

  • The brand in four facts
  • BindingClausthaler is a brand of the Binding-Brauerei in Frankfurt am Main.
  • 1952Since that year Binding has belonged to the Oetker group.
  • 2023The brewery in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen stops brewing and bottling in September.
  • DortmundSince then Clausthaler has been brewed and bottled at the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei.

Clausthaler is a brand of the Binding-Brauerei from Frankfurt am Main, now part of the Radeberger Gruppe. Conrad Binding, cooper and brewer, bought the small Glock brewery in Frankfurt's city centre on 1 August 1870; in 1881 he built a new brewery by the rock cellar on the Sachsenhäuser Berg. Binding has belonged to the Oetker group since 1952.

The Clausthaler brand came to Binding through one of the acquisitions with which the group expanded from the 1960s onwards in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and northern Baden.

In September 2022 the Radeberger Gruppe announced it would close the brewery in Frankfurt. Production was wound down step by step until 21 September 2023. Since then Clausthaler and Schöfferhofer have been brewed and bottled at the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei in Dortmund; that brewery also belongs to the Radeberger Gruppe.

There are two main routes to alcohol-free beer. The brewer can limit fermentation or stop it early, with a special yeast or at a lower temperature, so that hardly any alcohol forms. Or he first brews a full beer and then removes the alcohol, by heating or vacuum distillation; aromas evaporate along with it, and these are returned in the process.

Classic, Extra Herb, Naturtrüb and Radler: the entire Clausthaler range is alcohol-free.

Alcohol-free, 0.0 and low-alcohol

The label of this bottle says 0.0 per cent. In the Netherlands a beer may be called alcohol-free if it contains less than 0.1 per cent alcohol. If it contains between 0.1 and 1.2 per cent, it is called low-alcohol. A beer of 0.3 per cent is therefore not alcohol-free in the Netherlands but low-alcohol.

So 0.0 on the label means: below that limit of 0.1 per cent. It is a labelling term, not an arithmetical zero.

In other countries the limits are different. Belgium uses 0.5 per cent, Spain 1 per cent, France and Italy 1.2 per cent. As a result, the same beer may be called alcohol-free in one country and not in another.
