Why here

0.2 percent is not the same as 0.0

Anyone who asks in the shop for an alcohol-free IPA usually means 0.0 percent. Uiltje’s Bird of Prey is at 0.2 percent. That is little, but it is not zero, and in the Netherlands such a beer is called low-alcohol. We say so straight away, so you know what you are taking home.

For the rest it is a real Uiltje: an IPA with four hop varieties and a fruity, hoppy character instead of a flat bit of beer. The can is 33 centilitres.

If you are specifically looking for a 0.0, just let us know. We will then point you to a beer on the shelf that does carry it.

About the brewery

Uiltje Brewing Company from Haarlem

  • The brewery in brief
  • HaarlemThe brewery is on the Bingerweg.
  • UylemanRobbert Uyleman started the brand; the owl comes from his surname.
  • 2021The year the Bird of Prey 0.2% was released.
  • 2021Also the year in which Royal Swinkels Family Brewers took over the brewery.

Uiltje Brewing Company comes from Haarlem and was started by Robbert Uyleman, who first brewed at home and then for years had beer brewed at other breweries before a brewhouse of his own arrived on the Bingerweg. Sources differ on the exact year the brewery started, so we do not state it here.

The name and the owl on the label come from the founder’s surname. Since 2021 the brewery has belonged to Royal Swinkels Family Brewers.

The Bird of Prey 0.2% appeared in 2021 as the low-alcohol version of their IPA. The brewery names the hop varieties Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin. The label information in our online shop says 0.2 percent and 33 centilitres, country of origin the Netherlands.

Four hop varieties and 0.2 percent: little alcohol, but not zero.

What does 0.0 mean, and where is the limit?

In the Netherlands, the Commodities Act (Warenwet) determines what may appear on the label. The term alcohol-free may be used up to and including 0.1 percent alcohol. Low-alcohol runs from more than 0.1 percent up to and including 1.2 percent. A beer of 0.2 percent or 0.3 percent therefore belongs to that second group.

The Dutch Alcohol Act draws its own line: a drink with more than 0.5 percent alcohol at twenty degrees counts as an alcoholic drink. Those two limits are not in the same place, and that is where much of the confusion on the shelf comes from.

0.0 is not a legal designation in itself. It is a number that brewers put on the label. For the Bird of Prey that means: 0.2 percent, so low-alcohol and not 0.0. If you want 0.0 percent, choose a beer that really says 0.0 on it.
