Why here

Two sparkling wines from the Penedès, both without alcohol

When there is a toast and not everyone drinks, a non-alcoholic sparkling wine is the simplest solution. We have two from Vilarnau: a white and a rosé.

The label lines name Penedès as the region and macabeo and parellada as the grapes. These are two of the grapes from which cava is made in that region. Vilarnau belongs to González Byass.

Both labels also carry a serving recommendation: 6 to 8 degrees. Cold enough to keep the bubbles fine, and in practice that matters more than any other recommendation.

The two bottles we have in stock

Both 75 centilitres and 0 percent according to the label information. Prices subject to change; the current status is in the online shop.

About the brand

What happens to the alcohol

  • Vilarnau 0.0 in four facts
  • González ByassThe house that Vilarnau belongs to.
  • PenedèsThe region on both label lines.
  • Macabeo and ParelladaThe grapes on both label lines.
  • 0%The alcohol percentage on both labels.

An alcohol-free cava also starts out as wine with alcohol. The grapes are harvested, pressed and fermented. Without fermentation there is no wine, only juice. Only when the wine is finished is the alcohol removed.

In winemaking this is done in three ways. In vacuum distillation the pressure is lowered, so that alcohol evaporates at a low temperature instead of at 78 degrees. In reverse osmosis the wine is passed under pressure through a membrane that lets alcohol and water through and holds back colour, sugar and flavour compounds. In the spinning cone column the wine runs as a thin film over rapidly rotating cones; the aromas are first captured separately and returned at the end.

Which of those three is used at Vilarnau, we have not found in a source from the house itself. We therefore only write down what is stated: the region, the grapes, the percentage and the serving temperature.

Without fermentation there is no wine, only juice.

Can this still be called cava?

These two bottles have cava in the name, but under European wine rules a dealcoholised wine is a category of its own, with a ceiling of 0.5 percent alcohol. What exactly may appear on the label is determined by the producer together with the rules of its designation of origin; we use the name as it is supplied to us.

What is certain from the label: Spain as the country, Penedès as the region, macabeo and parellada as the grapes, 0 percent alcohol and 75 centilitres per bottle.

If you would like to know exactly what is on the bottle itself, please call us. We will take it off the shelf and read out what it says.

Two bottles, both available immediately: Vilarnau Cava Brut 0.0% and Vilarnau Cava Rosé 0.0%. Both 75 centiliters.

Who owns Vilarnau?

Vilarnau is a cava house owned by González Byass. The label line gives Penedès as the region.

Which grapes is Vilarnau 0.0 made from?

Both label entries we stock list macabeo and parellada.

How is an alcohol-free cava made?

Regular wine is made first, with fermentation and therefore with alcohol. Then the alcohol is removed, using vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis or a spinning cone column. Which technique was used here, we have not found in any source from the house.

How cold do you serve it?

The label states 6 to 8 degrees.

Why does alcohol-free wine sometimes say 0.0 percent and sometimes 0.5 percent?

0.5 percent is the upper limit that the European rules set for dealcoholised wine. Anyone who stays well below it puts 0.0 percent on the label. These two bottles say 0 percent.
