The beer we have in stock
Spanish beer with Philippine origins
- In brief
- 1890San Miguel starts as a brewery in the San Miguel district of Manila; in the same year Mahou starts in Madrid
- 1953The Manila agreement brings the brand to Spain, with technical assistance from the Philippine brewery
- 1957The Spanish company takes the name San Miguel and brews in Lleida
- 2000Mahou buys San Miguel España; together they form Mahou San Miguel
There are two San Miguels. The oldest is Philippine: in 1890 a brewery under that name started in the Manila district of San Miguel. The bottle on our shelf does not come from there, but from Spain.
In 1953 the Philippine brewery signed the so-called Manila agreement with Spanish entrepreneurs, including an agreement on technical assistance with setting up and product development. The Spanish company was first called La Segarra and was renamed San Miguel Fábricas de Cerveza y Malta in 1957. It brewed in Lleida, in Catalonia.
In 2000 Mahou, a Madrid family business that itself started in 1890, bought San Miguel España. Since then the Spanish San Miguel has been part of Mahou San Miguel, entirely in Spanish hands, with its head office in Madrid. The Philippine and Spanish branches are separate companies to this day; in 2014 they signed a cooperation agreement to develop the brand internationally.
One name, two breweries: the Philippine one from 1890 and the Spanish one from 1957. This bottle comes from Spain.
