Why here

Two botanicals you rarely see

Oregano and wild pistachio in a gin is unusual. They do not come from a marketing brainstorm but from the founder's childhood, who as a child gathered oregano and wild pistachio on the Turkish coast to sell.

Around them are five more common names: juniper berry, coriander seed, angelica root, lemongrass and cardamom. Seven in total.

  • PistachioThe herb that stands out.

Juniper Bird is made at Distilleerderij Onder de Boompjes in Schiedam. It is one of the houses the genever city has left, and it distils for several small brands.

The label says Schiedam Dry Gin. That is not a protected designation, but it is an honest one: the gin really does come from there.

The recipe is built around two herbs from the founder’s youth. That makes the bottle more personal than most.

Oregano and wild pistachio, from the founder's youth.

Practical

What this bottle goes with

Oregano pulls the gin to the savoury side, lemongrass and cardamom bring freshness back. That makes it suitable for a gin and tonic with a neutral tonic, and for drinks with savoury food.

At 42 percent, enough holds up in a tall glass.

Call 0570 541 278 or drop in at Brink 2 in Bathmen if you would like to talk it over.
