Why here

A bottle with a story from the mining region

Kompel is Limburgish for miner. The brand comes from Maasmechelen and was set up as a tribute to the coal mines of Belgian Limburg, where work went on until the 1980s.

Garden City refers to the garden village of Eisden: the workers' district built around the mine from 1911 onwards on the English model to house the miners and their families.

About the brand

From beer to spirits

  • The brand in brief
  • 2015The Kompel brand begins, with beer.
  • MaasmechelenBelgian Limburg.
  • 1911The year in which the garden village of Eisden was laid out.
  • 40%Alcohol percentage.

Kompel started in 2015 as a beer brand in Maasmechelen, set up by Frederic Fabry and Sandro Di Pietro. The whole brand is built around the mining history of the region: the names of the beers and bottles refer to the shafts, the districts and the work underground.

The gin belongs to a series that the brand calls its nostalgia series. We have not been able to establish with certainty who distils the gin; we therefore only state what is certain.

The garden villages near the Limburg mines are still there. Eisden-Tuinwijk is one of the best-preserved examples and is protected heritage.

Practical

What this bottle goes with

A pink gin at 40 percent works well in a long gin and tonic with plenty of ice. It is less suited to a dry Martini.

If you are from the region or know someone with miners in the family, this is above all a bottle to give as a gift.

Call 0570 541 278 or drop in at Brink 2 in Bathmen if you would like to talk it over.
