Five herbs from a small island
Panarea is the smallest inhabited island of the Aeolian archipelago, a group of volcanic islands north of Sicily. The recipe stays close to that place: juniper berry, coriander, lemon, orange and myrtle that grows on the island itself.
Five botanicals is few. That makes the myrtle (a Mediterranean shrub with a resinous, spicy berry) easy to recognise.

Behind this gin is the Inga family, who say they have been making liqueurs and spirits since the nineteenth century. The brothers Lorenzo and Federico Inga are now in charge.
The family keeps the recipe to itself. What they do mention are the five botanicals and the fact that the myrtle comes from Panarea itself.
Myrtle is a fixture on the Aeolian Islands and in Sardinia: liqueur has traditionally been made from it. In a gin it brings a resinous, almost pine-like spiciness that sits well alongside juniper.
Myrtle from Panarea, the herb that makes the island recognisable.
What this bottle goes with
With lemon and orange alongside the myrtle, this is an unmistakably Mediterranean gin. In a gin and tonic with a neutral tonic and a slice of lemon, it comes into its own.
44 percent is sturdy enough to hold its own in a Martini too.
